Caring for Beaches 7 Tips

Las Nieves beach is located in Agaete in the northwest of the island of Gran Canaria. It is one of the beaches with the best views on the island, as the Tamadaba mountain range rises to a great height and descends to the sea in front of us, creating an unparalleled landscape. Here nature shows us all its grandeur and exuberance for us to contemplate.

The beach has two distinct areas, separated by the old pier with stairs leading down to the sea. The first one on the left side has sand and some small pebbles. It is next to a crag that later turns into a cliff and the ravine where the Guayedra nudist beach is located, one of the natural and paradisiacal beaches in the area.

The second is the harbour side, a long pebble beach with some wooden platforms to lie on and a walkway running along it. Behind it are a number of bars and restaurants. The waters here are very calm as we are inside the harbour, making it an ideal beach for children as there are no waves. However, it is better if you wear booties so you can walk on the stones.

Where to eat in Playa de Las Nieves?

This beach is very popular with tourists because of its beautiful views and for this reason there is a wide range of restaurants to meet the demands of all the visitors who come here. And of course, the sea and the traditional Canarian cuisine are the protagonists of these restaurants. There is a wide variety of menus and à la carte dishes to suit all budgets, you just have to take a look around and see which one is right for you.

One of the best known and largest is the Dedo de Dios Restaurant, which refers to a pointed rock that was located in front of the cliffs and was knocked down by a storm. It is located on the sandy beach and then going along the street towards the port we find the restaurants Verona, Las Nasas and Puerto de Laguet. Then there is an area with terraces where you will find Mesón del Bocadillo, La Barca de San Andrés II, El Ragú, La Diosa de Mar and pizzeria Dibe. See here for restaurant reviews on tripadvisor.

What sports can you do in Playa de las Nieves?

Snorkelling and freediving

This is a highly recommended area for snorkelling as there are several striking blocks of rock to explore, but perhaps due to the type of sediment you may find yourself with little visibility. In front of the sandy beach, there are large boulders that protrude at low tide and are about 9 metres deep. It is full of fish in this area and there is a large cave that runs through the rocks from end to end. In this area they hold photo-sub competitions where they award prizes for the number of different species photographed.

Kayaking and paddle surfing

This is also an ideal area for kayaking and paddle surfing. If you are a beginner you can practice at the pier in calm waters and go out to the mountainous area in front to enjoy the cliffs and the beautiful views if you are already in control. Of course, you should always check the wave and wind forecast to go out safely. Because of the scenery, it is undoubtedly one of the best places to practice these sports.

Diving

Close to the beach and next to the restaurants, you will find the Agaete Diving Centre where you can do try dives and diving courses, as well as dives in the best dive sites in the area. We were lucky enough to do the freediving course here and to do the practical training in the sea. Apart from the incredible experience and the sensations of descending to a depth of 23 metres, having the fascinating views of the Tamadaba mountain in front of you is priceless.

What to do in Playa de Las Nieves?

Apart from going to the beach, from the beach to the natural pools of Las Salinas, there is a promenade where you can walk and watch the scenery. It becomes even more special at sunset, when you can see the sun setting behind the island of Tenerife and the reddish rays of sunlight over the mountains and the so-called "dragon's tail" that continues southwards. The old pier of the beach itself is also unavoidable to walk along. This way we can get as close as possible to the mountains from the sea front.
