Las Canteras Beach is located in Las Palmas and is considered the best urban beach in Europe, as attested by the many international awards it has received. Along its more than three kilometres of fine sand, in some areas volcanic black and in others golden, we can enjoy this gift of nature in the heart of the city of Las Palmas. It is located in the Bay of Cofital, on the tongue that connects the peninsula called La Isleta to the rest of the island. Along its promenade we can find all kinds of restaurants, bars, shops and surf schools.
It has a very peculiar characteristic and that is that the northern half of the beach is protected by a rock reef, La Barra, which serves as a breakwater and makes it like a natural swimming pool at low tide, as the waves do not pass through this barrier. So this area is ideal for swimming, especially for children due to the calmness of its waters. We also highly recommend this area for snorkelling and enjoying the abundant and varied marine fauna of the Canary Islands, in crystal clear, shallow waters.
The southern area is ideal for surfers as it does not have the protection of the reef and the waves reach the shore. This area is called La Cícer beach. Along the promenade, on the second line of the beach, there are many surf centres that offer classes and equipment rental. This was one of the first places in Spain where surfing began and there is a long tradition of surfing. The area with the biggest waves is in front of the Alfedo Kraus Auditorium, where you can go to see concerts, theatre and other cultural events.
As all this beach area is inhabited, parking is limited, but there are many public and private car parks all along the beach. We can also reach the beach by public transport, by bus, here called guagua. There are also a large number of hotels on this beach, which is the tourist centre of Las Palmas for a reason.
Las Canteras Beach does have the Blue Flag award due to the quality of its waters, the services available and its environmental management.
