La Laja beach is located at the entrance of the city of Las Palmas. In spite of being next to the road, the mountainous surroundings and the large sandy area make you feel you are in a remote natural place. The sand of this beach is dark and fine and you can take long and pleasant walks on this 1200 metre long beach. In the northern part are the natural pools of La Laja.
A promenade was built along the entire beach and now many people come here to walk from the nearby neighbourhoods of the city and also to have a good swim. There is a strong swell which is used for surfing in the central part of the beach. There was a strong current and a dike was built on the south side to slow it down and prevent the sand from being swept away. Even so, you have to be careful with the currents.
At low tide, the beach widens by several metres, making it even more magnificent. It is a beach that is only 3 km from the city and you will feel like you are in the middle of nature with beautiful views and in an incredible environment. In the afternoon, as the mountain is right next to it, the shadow will be cast on the beach quite early, so it's best to come in the morning or midday.
How to get to the car parks at Playa de la Laja?
If you come from the south you will come across the large 9-metre statue representing the god Triton with a seashell, which was used by the Guanches as an instrument to project sound and communicate. There is a car park at the top and a viewpoint overlooking the beach and the city, which is usually quite busy. There is a bus stop called Marfea right here, with multiple bus lines running here and into town.
On the north side of the beach and in the opposite direction of the road south out of the city, there is another car park. For this one we have to go to the right hand side arriving to a roundabout where there is a carrefour and a mercadona. We will continue to the end of Hoya de la Plata street until we find the car park. Buses 6 and 64 arrive here. This car park is the closest to the natural pools of La Laja.
